When I first visited NYC in 1994, it was a city in the process of change. Graffiti, shadows in doorways, and x-rated movie theaters still existed in Times Square, and there were sections of the city that were considered 'no man's land' after dark. It was literally like a scene from Midnight Cowboy, or Taxi Driver. When I moved to New York in 1997 the transformation was gentrifying. It slowly became a city that was safer to walk in, but in some ways, it was at the cost of its uniqueness. As I started to see things change overnight, I decided to document the beauty in it's apparent 'ugliness'.

It was my intention to capture and preserve the essence and unique qualities of a city that is quickly disappearing by the forces of progress. Old architecture often coupled with graffiti, grime, and a certain European sensibility has set the stage for many movies and romantic dreams in the best city in the world.
In some cases I’ve indicated the date the image was created (on-site), the location, and often the outdoor temperature or weather of the session in an effort to remember and recall the feeling of the experience of being there. Some places still exist, while others are on the verge of disappearing, and many others are just memories now.
I had many late night pastrami sandwiches at this place.

When It comes to quality there are two things you probably shouldn’t skimp on; paints, and brushes. Even if you have just a few ‘good quality’ brushes, it’s better than a ton of low-quality that shed bristles or don’t hold paint.
