When I first visited NYC in 1994, it was a city in the process of change. Graffiti, shadows in doorways, and x-rated movie theaters still existed in Times Square, and there were sections of the city that were considered 'no man's land' after dark. It was literally like a scene from Midnight Cowboy, or Taxi Driver. When I moved to New York in 1997 the transformation was gentrifying. It slowly became a city that was safer to walk in, but in some ways, it was at the cost of its uniqueness. As I started to see things change overnight, I decided to document the beauty in it's apparent 'ugliness'.
